Backgammon Tournaments in Italy: Torino and Jesolo
Italy had a busy backgammon calendar in spring 2006. This report covers an upcoming event, the 15th Tournament of the City of Torino, and the results of the 6th Tournament of the City of Jesolo, which drew more than 100 players.
15th Tournament of the City of Torino
The tournament was organised by Backgammon Point Torino, one of Italy's longest-standing clubs, founded in 1989. It was scheduled for 27–28 May 2006 at the Circolo Idea Bridge, piazza Lagrange 1, Torino, starting on Saturday at 14:00 and finishing on Sunday at 18:00. There were two categories:
- Masters: counted towards the national circuit ranking; a knockout with a progressive consolation. Places were awarded to the winner, the finalist, two semi-finalists and the consolation winner and finalist.
- Champions: not counted for the national circuit; part of the Italian-Swiss tournament series. Every player played up to seven 7-point matches, with places for first, second and third and for the consolation winner.
6th Tournament of the City of Jesolo
The Venice Backgammon Club and the Sport Association Dilettantistica held the 6th Tournament of the City of Jesolo from 28 April to 1 May 2006. Two neighbouring hotels in the town centre hosted the event: the Adlon, where players stayed, and the Marina, where the games were played. Play opened on Friday evening with the Coppia Davis doubles event, followed by a team tournament on Saturday afternoon and the main City of Jesolo tournament on Saturday evening. The programme also included a Swing tournament and the finals of the Veneto Championship.
The main event was won by Wolfgang Haas of Austria, who beat Giorgio Castellano, winner of the Copenhagen tournament, in the final. According to the organisers, winners and losers alike enjoyed the friendly four-day event, made possible by the cooperation of the Backgammon Club Venezia, the City of Jesolo and the two hotels, among others.
