Jarvis Trophy, February 2007
The Jarvis Trophy was played on 3-4 February 2007. The weekend began on Friday evening with the second Friday 500 of the season, followed by the Main and Consolation over Saturday and Sunday and a doubles knockout on Saturday night.
Friday 500 (12)
Rosey Bensley won the Friday 500. David Nathan, who had beaten John Slattery in the quarter-finals and Ed Turner in the semi-finals, met her in the final, where she won. With maximum points from the event, Bensley moved into joint first place in the Friday 500 standings with Mardi Ohannessian.
Main and Consolation
Thirty-eight players took part, and by Sunday morning the field had divided evenly, with 19 in the Main and 19 in the Consolation. In the Main, four players started with three wins from three. David Nathan lost to John Slattery and Tony Fawcett lost to Giorgio Castellano, and Castellano then beat Slattery to become the only player on five wins. A random draw among the players on four wins gave him Peter Chan as his opponent in the last round.
That 11-point match lasted thirteen games and went past the Crawford game, with Castellano leading 10-8. In one key game Chan redoubled to 4 while 57 pips behind in the race, a serious error, and Castellano took; later, 60 pips ahead, Castellano doubled and Chan passed. Chan did not win another point, and Castellano finished first with six wins. Adrian Jones and John Slattery both ended on five wins, and the tie-break put Jones second.
In the Consolation, Stephen Drake, Simon Morecroft and Julian Fetterlein all finished on three wins. The tie-break placed Fetterlein first, Morecroft second and Drake third.
Doubles (8)
The Saturday doubles knockout was played by teams with food-themed names. A Cake of Cheese beat Christmas Pudding in the final; The Italian Job and The Two Boys were the losing semi-finalists.
